Places to Visit in Hyderabad

Chowmahalla Palace

The official residence of the Nizams in the past, Chowmahalla palace is a sprawling monument comprising grandiose structures, including two enormous courtyards, a magnificent dining hall ‘Khilawat,’ and a splendid royal durbar.

Charminar

The Charminar is one of the most iconic landmarks in Hyderabad. It was commissioned by Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah; the reasons, however, are still speculations. The towering structure stands at 56 m on 4 prodigious columns, each sporting a minaret giving it its name.

Qutb Shahi Tombs

About 12 km from the city centre, these grandiose granite tombs mark the burial sites of seven of the eight Qutb Shahi rulers and are located just 7 km from Zostel Hyderabad. These domed architectural marvels are believed to be one of the oldest monuments of Hyderabad, which have withstood the test of time.

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

The world’s largest masonry dam, the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is built over the Krishna river, protected by 26 gates. The dam is 150 m tall and 16 km in width. It is among the earliest hydroelectric and multipurpose dams in the country. A popular tourist attraction, owing to its larger-than-life views of the surrounding landscape, the dam is located 152 km from the city centre. Tourists can indulge in boating at the dam and explore the Ethipothala Falls, just 14 km from the dam.

Golconda Fort

Just 13 km from the city centre, the Golconda Fort is one of the most famous landmarks of Hyderabad. Set on a 120 m granite hill, this magnificent fortress was fortified by the Qutb Shahs in the 16th century. The entire structure is encircled by crenellated ramparts and bids a view of the surrounding landscape.

The imposing fortress is also famed for its excellent acoustics used for security purposes in the past. The fort's architecture amplifies even the smallest of sounds and allows it to travel a distance within the fort, alerting its occupants. Additionally, travellers can catch light and sound shows every evening at this fort.

Statue of Equality

The 216-foot-tall Statue of Equality is the world’s second tallest metallic statue in a sitting position, settled 32 km from the city centre. The guests here can also enjoy Leela Jala Neerajanam- a dancing water show featuring lights and music.

Note: The Statue of Equality complex has a strict dress code, and only traditional Indian clothes are allowed. Meanwhile, electronic devices, smartphones, cameras, and food and beverages are strictly prohibited on the premises.

Himayat Sagar Lake, Hussain Sagar Lake, and Osman Sagar Lake

Hyderabad is truly blessed by numerous enchanting lakes. The Himayat Sagar Lake and the Osman Sagar Lake are about 27 km and 22.5 km, respectively, from the city centre. Lying parallel, the two artificial lakes bid a perfect picnic spot for all tourists to catch spectacular sunsets and explore nature.

Shopping Traditional Handicrafts at Shilparamam

The arts, crafts, and culture village of Hyderabad, Shilparamam, bids a kaleidoscope of handicrafts, including toys and artefacts that would make for perfect souvenirs.
