HIGHLIGHTS AND ACTIVITIES
Trekking: Himachal Pradesh has some of the finest trekking trails in the country. Thankfully we have some of the most fascinating ones among them in the vicinity of ZostelX Kotgarh. Popular treks in the area include: Hatu Peak Trek, Mural Danda Trek, Basleo Pass Trek and Sewolsar Lake Trek.
Cycling There are many paved and unpaved cycling routes in the area around the home. There are a few off-road cycling trails which go through winding forests – offering a thrilling, soul-satisfying experience.
St. Mary’s Church Built in 1872, the St. Mary’s Church stands out as an example of Gothic architecture. The Church is located in the middle of the Kotgarh village and has magnificent views which enhance the setting of what is one of the historic buildings of early missionary works. Alongside the Church is a school – Gorten Mission – named after a distinguished civil servant in Shimla during the British Raj.
Tani Jubbar Lake 9 Kms from the home, lies this beautiful lake called Tani Jubbar. The Lake is surrounded by high and dense cedar forest, forming an amazing landscape. The snow covered Himalayan ranges can be viewed from here. The Lake is home for different kinds of birds. A temple dedicated to Nag Devta is in the vicinity of the lake.
Fairs of Kotgarh and nearby areas To welcome different seasons, various fairs and festivals are celebrated in the valley. The local deities are invited to these fairs, along with the local Baja. There is lots of merry making and Nati, a popular local dance, is a sight of beholds and enjoy during these fairs.
Flora and Fauna There is a thick reserve forest from Narkanda toward Kotgarh which consist of Pine, Deodar, Oak, Moru, Rye trees. There is also abundant wildlife in these forests. If lucky, one can sight spotted Leopards, the Himalayan fox, Black bear, Jungle foul etc.
Hiking Due to the abundance of thick deodar forest and apple plantations, there are many short hiking trails near the cottage. We conduct special hikes and walks through thick deodar forest, through apple and cherry orchards and to various nearby lakes and temples. These can be attended by people of all ages.
Farming Farming/Gardening is considered to be an educating and relaxing activity. At ZostelX, we consider farming as one of the most engaging activity for our guests. As the home is surrounded by a farm/orchard there are many crops and vegetables which are cultivated here. The gardens around the home have various species of flowers. There are many activities happening on the farms/gardens every day – offering opportunity for the guests to indulge and being a part of local life.

By Bus: All the outstation buses come via Shimla and from there you can hire a cab/shared taxi or go by local buses till Thanedhar and from there Zostel X is only 1.5 km.
By Air: The nearest airport is Shimla Airport which is located 98 km away from Kotgarh You can make the onward journey to Thanedhar by Bus or Taxi, approx. fare for taxi - INR 2000 - 2500.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Shimla which is located 80 km. You can make the onward journey to Thanedhar by Bus or Taxi, approx fare for taxi - INR 1800 - 2200.

Kotgarh is endowed with rich culture that has distinct societal norms, language, music, and architecture. It is a beautiful valley at an elevation of 7,000 feet, overlooking the Satluj River and the snow-clad sub-Himalayan range. The area is dotted with sprawling apple plantations and seasonal cherry blossoms that only add to its already beautiful setting.

The property is 1.5 km from Thanedar Market. So, reach Thanedar and take the Bhutti road. Drive for 1 km and then make a left turn towards Shathal road. The first gate you see is your destination - Zostel Homes Kotgarh (Shimla) at Deodar Cottage.
House Policies
- Footwear is not allowed inside the property. Instead, guests will be provided with slippers.
- Drinking and smoking are prohibited inside the property. Guests are requested to resort to the open areas for the same.
- No room or luggage services will be provided at the property.
- All the food served will be home-cooked.
- Any special request regarding food or facilities needs to be intimated in advance.
- The area will have to be kept noise-free post 10 pm.
- Nature and surroundings should be respected and taken care of at all times.

Our hosts, Mr and Mrs Mehta have spent a good part of their lives in the mountains. They are both adventure enthusiasts, with Mr Mehta also being a member of the official Raid-de-Himalaya motorsport rally. Young at heart, the couple is always up for a chat or a walk back into the memory lane with their village stories. You can approach them for delicious local meals, adventure activities, and everything in between. Also keeping company is Elsa, a cheerful dog whose company you'll love easily.
